More about our NHS partners
INSIGHT's founding partners are two of the UK's leading NHS eye care centres: University Hospital Birmingham (UHB) NHS Foundation Trust and Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) is the lead institution for INSIGHT. It operates one of the country's leading ophthalmic centres: as well as 14 consultant ophthalmologists, the eye service is supported by an Orthoptic Department, Optometrist and Low Vision Refraction Service, and a Low Vision Nurse Service. Many sub-speciality clinics have been developed, and there is close communication with consultants in other specialities.
Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the leading provider of eye health services in the UK and a world-class centre of excellence for ophthalmic research and education, with a history stretching back over 200 years. Their 2,300 staff are committed to providing the highest quality of ophthalmic care and remaining at the cutting edge of developments in ophthalmology.
The NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology is dedicated to pioneering vision research. The BRC is supporting INSIGHT with its public and patient involvement and engagement (PPIE).
About our industry partners
Google Health is a team within Google focused on health-related research, initiatives and products. The Google Health team includes experts who are leveraging expertise in AI, hardware, products and more to solve big challenges and help people lead healthier, more productive lives.

Dr Cían Huges, Industry Partner – Google Health
In addition to the expertise of Google Health, Google will be providing Google Cloud Platform credits to support the technical infrastructure and, where appropriate, technical expertise.
“We’re studying the use of artificial intelligence to assist in diagnosing cancer, predicting patient outcomes, preventing blindness and much more. We’re also exploring ways to improve patient care, including tools that are already being used by clinicians. And we’re partnering with doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to help improve the care patients receive.”
Roche has had a presence in the UK since 1908, where their pharmaceutical business is an important global centre for researching and developing novel medicines.

Dr Jill Hopkins, Industry Partner – Genentech/Roche
“We want to share our knowledge and expertise by being a key part of the collaboration to help address the growing unmet need in ophthalmic disease and drive the future of eye health.
“Our success in developing new treatments rests on access to high quality data. We want to be part of improving the data landscape overall, as this will mean we all have better data to facilitate our work, ultimately bringing benefit to patients. This approach necessitates willing partners, as with INSIGHT, seeking to combine their data and expertise to create a thriving health data environment.
Partnerships like INSIGHT are crucially important in shaping the transformation of healthcare in the digital age together. INSIGHT is a great example of the UK being one of the best places in the world to invest in global life sciences, and for Roche it makes complete sense to be part of it.”
About our academic and charity partners
Founded in 1900 as England’s first civic university, the University of Birmingham is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, and was the first in the country to incorporate a medical school. Innovative academic research at the University has influenced society and made an impact on people’s lives. It is where pacemakers and plastic heart valves were developed, and where the first artificial vitamin (Vitamin C) was synthesised.
Action Against Age-related Macular Degeneration
Action Against AMD was founded by four charities: Fight for Sight, Macular Society, Blind Veterans UK, Sight Scotland / Sight Scotland Veterans.
This groundbreaking medical research charity aims to stop the epidemic of sight loss caused by age-related macular degeneration. They are focused on facilitating research around early-stage AMD, raising awareness and funding from strategic organisations around the world.
“As the premier health data research hub for eye health, INSIGHT is a great example of the UK being one of the best places in the world to invest in global life sciences.”
